January 2011 Review
Temperatures in January 2011 averaged three degrees below average (29.3 in Philadelphia versus an average of 32.3) -- certainly not top 10 or top 20 cold but a pretty cold month nonetheless. After a warm start (early January thaw) temperatures average below average for 20 of the last 29 days in January (some days were exactly average), including our first sub ten degree low in Philadelphia since 2009.
Snowfall in January was the third most on record -- 25.2" for the month. Through the end of January, our total of 37.9" was the second most on record, behind only 1995-96's 43.0" total to this point. Yep, we're ahead of last winter's 78.7" pace but keep in mind last February brought 51.5" of snow to the region. Right now, the long range doesn't quite seem so conducive to 50" of snow this month.
