Showery Start, Cooler Today

A cool front bisects the region this morning, with rain on the western side of the region and dry (for now) east.   Temperatures early this morning range from the warmer 60's along and east of I-95 to the 50's...and even 40's west of the city as areas of showers and light rain spread northeast along and just west of the front.   This morning will feature a cooling trend for folks in the city and east as the front will gradually ooze east and showers will gradually lift northeast.

Off and on rain will continue into the afternoon before ending from west to east.   Expect about a quarter inch of rain in many spots, with some totals nudging a bit higher to the north and west of town.  

Temperatures may recover some later this afternoon if some sun manages to pop through the cloud cover this afternoon, with some low 60's possible in the city and south later on today if that manages to be the case.   Regardless, it will be a good 20-25 degrees cooler in many locations as this front puts an end to a rather short, but noticeable warm up.

Showers Stay North & West Of The City Today

A mild morning through the region under mainly cloudy skies.  A few showers sneaked into parts of Delaware and South Jersey last night but the atmospheric lift responsible for those showers weakened and the showers dissipated during the late evening hours.   The region is on the warmer side of a slow moving cold front that is in Ohio, a front that will take 48 hours to reach the East Coast and will present shower chances for parts of the region over the next three days.

Today's shower chances will stay to our west and north -- generally west of I-81 as the main track of any showers that are currently falling in Western Pennsylvania is to the northeast.   The slow eastward march of the front will result in a steady stream of scattered showers falling out by State College and Pittsburgh during the day, while those showers will be more scattered if not isolated across Central Pennsylvania later on this afternoon.   Any showers that pop in Central Pennsylvania should not result in a total washout nor will those those showers be heavy.  

For us in Philadelphia, mostly cloudy skies are expected and not a terrible day by any stretch as high temperatures will top out around 70 away from the Shore.

Some Drizzle Possible Late Tonight

While the initial prospect for warmth on Sunday looked good at first glance, the reason the warm up gets delayed by a day is due to drizzle and light showers that could pop up later tonight. Higher resolution computer guidance is showing the potential for showers and drizzle across the area later tonight, lingering into the morning hours on Sunday. While not a significant "rain" event by any stretch, the presence of low clouds and moisture into Sunday morning may limit how much warming we see.

Temperatures aloft will warm a good deal but the surface wind trajectory (south) will pull in moisture off of the cool Atlantic.  That stable layer will reside underneath that warmth aloft and will lead to clouds for a good chunk of the day.   As winds nudge more southwesterly towards evening, dry and warm air to the southwest should begin to work in.  We could see some clearing in the clouds...at least some brightening...towards dinner.   70 may be a tough goal to realize but if we can coax a couple of hours of late afternoon sun temperatures could reach 65 in Philly.

At least Monday will be much, much warmer...even if it is just a single day event!
