A murky start to Sunday across the region as fog, drizzle, and a few showers/storms dot the regional landscape. This is a pattern that will likely rinse and repeat over much of the coming week, with shower and storm chances holding serve until perhaps the end of this week as a stubborn area of low pressure sits in place over the Ohio Valley and Appalachians. Today provides the opportunity for more showers and storms as a piece of energy spins up with the upper level system and moves through the region this afternoon and evening.
If we can get into partial sunshine later, the potential for strong or even severe thunderstorms does exist for parts of the region with that piece of energy moving through and firing up thunderstorms. The best chances for any severe will be from the Philly region on south, including Delaware and South Jersey. It's not a slam dunk severe situation today by any stretch -- you can look outside this morning and see the fog and low clouds in place and know the odds for severe happening are pretty low. However, if we can brighten enough and get a few moments of sun there is enough energy in the atmosphere for storms to get a bit bumpy after 3 or 4 PM, first to our south and southwest, and then after 5 PM in the Philly area.
Looking at atmospheric parameters, gusty winds would be the biggest culprit in any of the stronger storms that pop later on as well as briefly heavy rain. Flooding shouldn't be an issue again today but a few more rounds of a half inch rains will probably start bringing some soggier soil to the area in the coming days.
