Tonight's Thunderstorms

As we work into the evening hours around Philadelphia, scattered thunderstorms continue across a number of locations, especially west and south of Philadelphia.   A shot of stable, cool air has worked south into Bucks, parts of Montgomery, and points north and east of that.  You can see the temperature contrast between Lancaster (84) and Quakertown (66), with a stalled frontal boundary lying in between the two locations.  This front is poised to hold serve through the evening hours before slowly meandering northward later on tonight.   Showers and thunderstorms will continue across the warm sector, especially in Central Pennsylvania as a disturbance works east this evening, through the evening hours.   Thunderstorms that are presently out in Central Pennsylvania could cross through the Philadelphia region towards or just after midnight, perhaps lingering in New Jersey or the Philadelphia region into the morning hours.   They are not moving very quickly (less than 20 mph in the westernmost cells, some cells around Reading are moving very little at this hour).

Some of the thunderstorms in Central Pennsylvania could produce a couple of inches or more of rain out to our west and some localized flooding could result in Lancaster, Berks, or counties west of that.   Given that the ground around the region is rather dry it may take more than a couple of inches of rain to lead to flooding issues unless the rain is excessive in intensity.      However, as the storms work east into our part of the world the atmosphere is a good bit more stable than it is to the west thanks to the push of Atlantic air into our region so the threat for anything overly nasty should diminish as they work into the region.
