June 9th, 2011 Forecast

A sauna awaits the region tonight as today's heat lingers through much of the night.   Overnight lows tonight should only dip into the 70's across much of the region, with the city struggling to get much below 80 tonight.   Tomorrow may ultimately end up as hot, perhaps even a degree warmer, than today.    There isn't much difference in the scale of "hotness" when temperatures get into the upper 90's and near 100 degrees as temperatures in that ballpark are pretty nasty.   The big questions tomorrow are if the record high of 98 goes down, can Philly or someone nearby hit 100, and what about thunderstorms for tomorrow night?

First, the record high of 98 could be in jeopardy as the core of the heat ridge will be in place early in the morning tomorrow.  With west southwest winds and a warm atmosphere we should see temperatures climb into the upper 90's/near 100 department for locations away from the coast, with the Shore seeing little in the way of relief as temperatures flirt with 90 degrees even there tomorrow afternoon.   Getting to 100 could occur in a few rogue spots and probably will occur with optimistic bank thermometers but again, the difference between upper 90's and 100 is cosmetic as temperatures in that range are flat out hot.

As a cool front slides south towards the region tomorrow, thunderstorms are expected to break out and move towards the region from the west and northwest.   Thunderstorms could move in after dinner tomorrow night -- we'll have more information about that later this evening.   Some of the storms could be severe, especially north and west of the city where they would move in earlier in the evening.
